Dubuffet and the Magicians.
Singular Expressions 1945-2000.
The artistic contribution and impact of Jean Dubuffet at the end of the Second World War were considerable. He "invented" Art Brut and, for the first time, gave this singular form of expression?until then ignored or neglected?broad visibility, while also developing a wholly original way of painting himself. At a moment when abstraction was establishing its dominance over painting in France, and figuration was resisting by asserting its traditional strengths, Dubuffet revealed that there existed an art that defied official canons and ignored the usual pathways of established culture. He invented a new source of inspiration, a new way of painting beyond the major currents of art, and a revolutionary doctrine that shook existing certainties. He innovated, unsettled, and opened new perspectives. He paved the way for magic and for the magicians.
