Gestural period (1955-57)

After breaking with the Surrealists because of profound disagreements about the theory surrounding the meaning of modern painting, Simon Hantaï, deeply influenced by the work of Jackson Pollock, painted abstract works using large scraping movements with the face of a dismembered alarm clock. One of the most famous of these is the emblematic Sexe-prime.
